Our history
As the Freie Christengemeinde Frankfurt e. V. we are an evangelical church and belong to the Bund Freikirchlicher Pfingstgemeinden KdöR and the Evangelical Alliance of Frankfurt (Evangelischen Allianz Frankfurt).
The history of our church goes far back: The roots of the FCG lie in the prayer group called “Philadelphia”, which was first mentioned in writing in 1935. Just under two dozen Christians initially came together in the mirror-gallery of Großen Hirschgraben in Frankfurt. In 1945, after the cities bombing in World War 2, they met in private rooms for a few months before an air-raid shelter of a destroyed school near the main train station became the first “church”. In 1948, wooden barracks were built next to the destroyed school. The materials were donated by the Pentecostal Church in Stockholm.
On October 8th, 1954, the first constitution of the association Freie Christengemeinde Frankfurt am Main e.V. was passed. In 1959 the property at Eckenheimer Landstraße 178 was put into operation and inaugurated with a big celebratory party on Whitsunday 1960. Above the worship hall, the church rented out space with various businesses that offered sleeping accommodations. In 1986, the foyer was added with an office wing on the floor above.
In 2012, the buildings were further expanded and the YOU5 dormitories were created, where young people can rent affordable apartments which helps to quickly gain a foothold in Frankfurt. A modern rear building was built in the courtyard, which contains the Raum & Zeit Lounge (Cafe) as well as seminar and children’s rooms on three floors.
Since 2015, Tobias Karcher has been the senior pastor responsible for the direction of FCG Frankfurt. During the corona pandemic, from 2020 – 2022, the entire church basement area was renovated and modernized to create opportunities for larger events and conferences. In 2020, church services were broadcast live for the first time, creating the FCG Frankfurt online campus.
